Who Invented That Symbol?
Jeff Miller maintains a list of the earliest known uses of various mathematical symbols here. He also has a list of the earliest known uses of various mathematical words. Sometimes you can forget that symbols like < and !, when used as mathematical notation, haven't been around for eternity but were in fact invented.
